What have rabbits been learning about?
In Rabbits class, we’ve spent an exciting half term learning about Ancient Egypt, and it’s been one of our favorite topics! We’ve had the chance to dive deep into this fascinating civilization by writing fact files and diary entries, discussing key facts, and even participating in an amazing Egyptian workshop. The workshop was a highlight, where we learned incredible details, like how the Egyptians built the Great Pyramid of Giza, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It took around 20 years to construct and was built for Pharaoh Khufu. Another fascinating aspect of Ancient Egypt that we explored was their unique system of writing called hieroglyphics. These were picture-based symbols that represented sounds, words, and ideas, and were often used in tombs and temples. The children have loved writing their own names in hieroglyphics!
We also learned about the practice of mummification, where Egyptians preserved the bodies of the deceased to ensure they could live on in the afterlife. The mummification process involved removing internal organs, drying the body with salt, and wrapping it in linen bandages.
The Nile River was another crucial part of Egyptian life, providing water, transportation, and fertile land for farming. The annual flooding of the Nile left behind rich soil, which made it perfect for growing crops like wheat and barley.
We also explored the iconic Great Sphinx, a massive statue with the body of a lion and the head of a Pharaoh, which stands near the pyramids and has fascinated people for centuries. Cleopatra, the last Pharaoh of Egypt, was another key figure we studied. She was known not only for her political and diplomatic skills but also for her relationships with Roman leaders like Julius Caesar and Mark Antony.
We were amazed to learn that the Egyptians had an advanced understanding of medicine, including using herbs and even performing surgery. They were also pioneers in creating a solar calendar, which had 365 days and helped them organize their farming and festivals. The colorful and symbolic art of Ancient Egypt, which often depicted gods, pharaohs, and everyday life, was another highlight of our studies.
This topic has been a fantastic learning experience, and we’ve enjoyed every bit of it. It’s amazing to think about all the incredible achievements of the Ancient Egyptians, from their architectural wonders to their art and science. We’re excited to continue exploring history and learning more about other civilizations in the future!
