The Mayans
This half term, we have been learning about an ancient civilisation: The Mayans.
The Maya civilization was an advanced Mesoamerican culture that thrived in present-day Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. They are known for their achievements in architecture, mathematics, astronomy, and writing.
Time Period: The civilization emerged around 2000 BCE, reached its peak between 250–900 CE (Classic Period), and declined after 900 CE.
Cities: Major cities included Tikal, Chichen Itza, Palenque, Copán, and Uxmal.
Architecture: Built massive pyramids, palaces, and temples, often decorated with intricate carvings.
Writing System: Used Mayan hieroglyphics, one of the most sophisticated writing systems in the pre-Columbian Americas.
Mathematics & Astronomy: Developed a vigorous calendar system (the Long Count calendar) and understood the concept of zero.
Religion: Polytheistic, worshiping gods related to nature, time, and the cosmos (e.g., Kukulkan, the feathered serpent god).
Decline: Theories for their decline include droughts, warfare, overpopulation, and resource depletion.
Legacy: Modern Maya people still live in Central America, preserving many traditions.
