Autumn 1
This half term we have been learning all about Paddington Bear and his adventures around the United Kingdom. We have been identifying the four countries that make up the UK, their capital cities, major landmarks and the seas that surround the UK.
In DT we have been thinking about cooking food using kitchen tools such as spoons, knives and forks and how we use these to spread, mash, spoon and carefully slice. We made a delicious bean hummus, a Paddington Bear inspired snack and a layered breakfast.
In science we have been exploring forces, looking at push and pulls. We looked carefully at how certain objects move. We set up some slopes in our classroom and selected some objects to see how they move. We noticed that objects moved differently and at different speeds. Some objects rolled and some objects slid down. We then experimented by putting different materials on our slope to see if this affected the speed at which a ball travelled down. We used timers and rulers to measure our results and found that bumpier, rougher materials tended to cause more friction and slowed the ball down, whereas smoother materials caused the ball to move faster. Finally, we looked at incline and changes the steepness of our slopes to see if this changed the speed and the distance the ball travelled.
In PE we focused on wellbeing and teamwork. Each lesson had a wellbeing focus, where we focused on how exercise made us feel and how we can regulate our bodies through breathing and yoga. We played a wide variety of team games to practise working together. We thought about how we speak to one another, how we can share equipment, how we encourage one another and relate to each other to get the best outcome. Our favourite game was called shipwreck! We had to cross the sharky waters in our team and jump into our little boats altogether when our teacher shouted 'Shipwreck!'
